从例6看，“长短”之义为“长度”，基本上只有一个字面语义，而例7中的“长短”则看不出它的字面语义，它的含义是字面以外的，即“不幸”或“死亡”。所以宜将它们分别译成length与anything should happen．
例8：冬天来了，要时刻注意动物园里动物的冷暖。
As winter is coming，the changes of the weather to the animals in the zoo must be paid much attention to．
例9：当地政府时刻把科研人员的冷暖挂心头。
The local government is always concerned about the well-being of the scientific research personne1．
可以看出，例8中“冷暖”只有字面语义，宜译成the changes of the weather，而例9中的“冷暖”与天气无关，它的实际语义为“利益”或“福利”，故译成well—being较为恰当。
对字面语义加字外语义的词，语义更加丰富，在不同场合有不同含义，必须根据上下文的特定语境反复推敲其实际含义，然后选择恰当的词汇进行翻译，否则就会译不通，读不懂。
例l0：用肉眼看，太阳的轨迹好像只直线运行于东西。
The sun appears in a straight motion between the east and west to the naked eye．
例11：南极对于人类还是个谜，有很多东西值得研究。
The Antarctic Pole，in which there are many things to study，is still a mystery to man．
例12：从血缘上讲，有些雄性动物真不是东西，平时对雌性六亲不认，只有要交配时才表示出亲昵。

上述三例中的“东西”分别表示不同的含义，例10中的语义应是“方位”，译为east and west，例11中的语义应泛指“具体的或抽象的事物”，英文用things比较恰当，而例l2中的语义既不属双字语义也不属单一语义，而是表示动物的一种“喜厌情感”，这里表示厌恶，故用despicable creatures较为适宜。
例l3：这画的左右分别藏有一幅画中画。
On each side of the picture there is a hidden picture．
例l4：有人认为，假如克隆一头牛只需花300美元左右，那么家禽动物宁肯用克隆。
It is held that people prefer cloning poultry if cloning a COW only costs about 300 dollars．
例l5：在某种意义上说，左右农作物生长的是老天爷。
The weather is the master of crops in a way．
例16：比尔-盖茨的确精明能干，但事实上，他的左右总有一批出谋划策的人。

例l3中的“左右”就是它的双字语义“左边”与“右边”，英文用on each side of很吻合。
