    19. Gunn J, Hegarty K, Nagle C, Forster D, Brown S, Lumley J. Putting woman-centered care into practice: a new (ANEW) approach to psychosocial risk assessment during pregnancy. Birth 2006;33:46-55.
Abstract: BACKGROUND: When antenatal care is provided, identification and management of challenging problems, such as depression, domestic violence, child abuse, and substance abuse, are absent from traditional midwifery and medical training. The main objective of this project was to provide an alternative to psychosocial risk screening in pregnancy by offering a training program (ANEW) in advanced communication skills and common psychosocial issues to midwives and doctors, with the aim of improving identification and support of women with psychosocial issues in pregnancy. METHODS: ANEW used a before-and-after survey design to evaluate the effects of a 6-month educational intervention for health professionals. The setting for the project was the Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, Australia. Surveys covered issues, such as perceived competency and comfort in dealing with specific psychosocial issues, self-rated communication skills, and open-ended questions about participants' experience of the educational program. RESULTS: Educational program participants (n = 22/27) completed both surveys. After the educational intervention, participants were more likely to ask directly about domestic violence (p = 0.05), past sexual abuse (p = 0.05), and concerns about caring for the baby (p = 0.03). They were less likely to report that psychosocial issues made them feel overwhelmed (p = 0.01), and they reported significant gains in knowledge of psychosocial issues, and competence in dealing with them. Participants were highly positive about the experience of participating in the program. CONCLUSIONS: The program increased the self-reported comfort and competency of health professionals to identify and care for women with psychosocial issues

    20. Hardin E, Khan-Hudson A. Elder abuse--"society's dilemma". J Natl Med Assoc 2005;97:91-94.
Abstract: Elder abuse and neglect has been recognized as a growing problem in the United States, and this trend is likely to increase unless firm steps are taken to prevent it. All 50 states have reporting requirements for elder abuse and neglect. However, to date, there is no federal policy requiring reporting of elder abuse and neglect. In order to stem the tide of this awful scourge on society, we must continue to train caregivers and healthcare workers in the proper care and treatment of our elder citizens. Healthcare workers, especially emergency medicine physicians and nurses, must take the lead in this endeavor. There must be organized programs in healthcare facilities to facilitate the training of medical personnel. Scientific literature suggests that the abusers appear to be family members and caretakers of the elderly. Goals for prevention include enhancing quality of life, preventing family breakdown, and keeping the elderly persons in their homes as long as possible, if this is their wish. Intervention appears to be one of the best ways of prevention

Abstract: Domestic violence has profound effects on the health of women. According to the World Health Organization, violence is a significant risk factor for morbidity and mortality in women. If violence is not taken into account as a cause of health problems, there is a high risk of inappropriate health care. More attention to the issue of domestic violence in medical history, diagnosis and therapy is the objective of the "S.I.G.N.A.L. Intervention Project to Combat Violence Against Women". The "S.I.G.N.A.L. Project" is the first intervention project against violence in a medical setting in Germany. It was started in 1999 in the emergency room of Benjamin Franklin University Hospital (Charite Campus Benjamin Franklin). The goal of the project is to initiate prevention and intervention for violence against women by providing the abused women with appropriate support and treatment. The program is based on the intervention objectives: ask about abuse, assess for danger, inform and refer victims to counselling programs and women's shelters, and document injuries and health problems for use in legal proceedings
